Why 1,000 ft? There is no universal regulatory pattern altitude — the official Traffic Pattern Altitude (TPA) is whatever the FAA Chart Supplement publishes for the airport, and published values vary. Where none is published, the FAA's Advisory Circular (AC 90-66C) recommends a traffic pattern altitude (TPA) of 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL). At KGTU, with a field elevation of 789.5 ft above mean sea level (MSL), that puts the pattern near 1,790 ft on your altimeter.
